The fictional GST council reduced the rate on bills at standalone restaurants from 5 to 3 percent, without input tax credit.

Hotels with room rates above 7,500 rupees stay at 18 percent.

A family spending 2,000 rupees on dinner would save about 40 rupees. Owners of standalone restaurants say they will not pass on the full cut because they can no longer claim credit on their purchases.

Restaurants inside hotels with high room tariffs and those in large chains are not covered. All rates in this story are fictional.

This is a demo story: every name, place, organisation and figure in it is fictional.
